Baseball Park Cake- Texas Rangers

This was made with a 14 inch round and a 10 inch square. I cut each in half and pieced it together in this shape, making double layers.

The deco is fondant for the brown (dirt) and buttercream for the green & white.

I know it's not a scale model of any kind... just green grass & 4 bases...

The most important part is that it tasted great and the birthday boy was happy.

Cute Puppy Dog Cake

This cake was made by piecing together a loaf pan size cake with some smaller round cakes. The head is rice crispy treats shaped like a head and then topped with buttercream and fondant. The legs are pieces of cake cut to fit.

It was all put together and covered in buttercream and decorated with MMF.

My daughter loved it!

Ladybug cake

This was baked in a bowl (Pyrex) for the body. I added a round cake for making it the perfect height. The head is a smaller, 4" round cake (2-layers) carved out for the rounded head.

The icing is buttercream and the black head is marshmallow fondant.

The leaf & dewdrops underneath the ladybug are also MMF.

A cake for chocolate Lovers

This was my first attempt at a filled cake. It has chocolate cake (Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge) and home made whipped chocolate ganache in between the layers (4). The icing is home made chocolate fudge icing, and it's been drizzled with white & dark chocolate as well as topped with shaved chocolate.

Jeopardy Theme Cake

My husband appeared on 4 Jeopardy episodes! I'm so proud of him. We had a watching party & I made this custom cake.

I'm still learning how to use fondant, and I don't quite have the right tools, but I think it turned out okay anyway. The best part was the taste... it was chocolate.

Cuddly Teddy Bear Cake

My daughter wanted a shaped cake, and we happened to find a Wilton Teddy Bear cake pan at my mom's house. (Thanks, Mom!)

My daughter was thrilled. We followed the directions on the box for making the cake more dense so it would hold its shape. It was moist and delicious with the addition of dry pudding mix.

I'm still learning to work with fondant, so this took me a little longer than usual... hours, actually, since I don't have proper fondant tools.

I think my daughter was pleased. It also tasted yummy. What good is a pretty cake if it doesn't taste good?!!

Black-Suited Spiderman Symbiate

My nephew, who is 3, can tell you anything you ever wanted to know about Spiderman. He requested this cake, which I wasn't sure I could do free-hand. It was perfect for him. I just used different concentrations of black coloring on a buttercream icing.

Cow Cake

Using a photo, I made a copy-cat cow cake. I used a 10 inch round pan for the base and a pampered chef small mixing bowl to bake the head. I shaved the head down a little to make it more rounded. The eyes and nostrils are Whoppers® candies.

Sunflower Cake Cookie

This one is for a kid at heart. I used a big cake pan to make a large chocolate chip cookie. Then, I put yellow Zingers to make the sunflower petals. To soften the edges, I used chocolate icing to fill in around the cookie. I placed it on a few pieces of metallic green tissue paper (on a large round tray) and it was perfect!

CandyLand Cake

This was a challenge for me, but so cute & fun.

I baked a 18x14 cake. 2 cake mixes. Made one batch of buttercream icing in 3 colors (white/pink/purple) and used green color spray (food coloring spray) on the top before I added all the extra.

List of candies & goodies on the cake:

Starbursts
Dots
Sixlets
colored licorice
spice drops (small gumdrops)
chocolate chips (I melted about 1/4 cup in a baggy in the microwave & squeezed it out into a 'glump' near the last curve.)
round peppermints
mini candy canes (I didn't have these and had to substitute ornaments)
gingerbread cookie minis (again, I used ornaments from Hobby Lobby)
Fruit Roll ups and Fruit by the foot
Peanuts
Gummy Life Savers
Dum-dums (or any small lollipops)

If you look closely at the cakeyou might see where I placed everything. If I had it to do over again, I would have cut the licorice up for the pathway. They are the right colors and I could have trimmed them to curve better. I just put them on the border this time.

My birthday girl put together the outside border of Sixlets and Dots. Overall, it was a fun project. I couldn't fit everything from the game board on it, but it was fun to try. I put it together the morning of the party. I don't recommend doing it the night before because some of the candies might start to melt or break down and bleed color into the icing.

Hannah Montana Cake

This one was pretty easy.

Basic Buttercream icing, 2 layers of 9x13 trimmed up to look sharp, and the face of Hannah Montana from a party blower.

The words are: Sweet Niblets! Erin is 9

Sweet Niblets is a phrase that Hannah Montana uses when she is surprised by something. I'm surprised that 9 years have passed so quickly.

Flip Flop Cake for a Luau

This was made using two 9x13 cakes. I just made a template of a flip flop on paper to use as a guide for cutting the cakes. I used buttercream icing and some canned Betty Crocker icing for the decorations. I used soft Twizzler licorice for the straps and Runts candies for the section where the straps meet.

I put some leis around it for a festive look.

This is probably the easiest one I've made. The only hard part was the crumb coat since this is a chocolate cake. I tend to use twice as much icing when the cake is chocolate because the crumbs get all over in the first layer of icing.

I chose 2 colors blended on white to create this misty look. The cups and table cloth Sarah picked were from the Magic of Pegasus Barie theme. The candle appears to be the Princess and the Pauper theme. Sarah didn't mind, so here we are with a mix of the two.

I used a large spreader from Pampered Chef to do the main icing. Then I used the small spreader for the colors on the sides. The piping was done with Wilton tip number 78 with a portion of all 3 colors in one icing bag.

I have about 2 Tablespoons of icing left. I might go back and make it more violet so I can redo the name and age...hmmm... There is not enough contrast now that I look at it again.

Sooo... I messed with it and messed it up and tried to fix it and made many more errors & just had to live with it.

Dirt Bike Track Cake

I cut a round cake in half [or a bit off center for different height 'hills'] place them flat and end to end on a cookie sheet. Crush a package of chocolate grham crackers and sprinkle all over sheet and frosted cake. Add some easter grass on the side and for the top add a miniature dirt bike. The side view is two round hills of a dirt bike track. It was a great cake for a pre-teen boy, his friends thought it was soooo cool and he was proud. It was very easy.

Ariel Cupcake Cake

We are having Hannah's party away from home, so I thought I'd make cupcakes instead of trying to cut a cake on a playground. I frosted each one generously, then I took my spreader and smoothed them together.

I bought the cake topper at Walmart for $5... and it was broken. Thankfully, I had my trusty glue gun handy.

I made pink hearts on the cupcakes and filled each one with red sugar.

Tomorrow, I'll add her name and #6.

My version of a Cheetah Girls Cake

I didn't know how to pull off a Cheetah Girls cake, so here is what I ended up doing.

Since Cheetah Girls is a singing group, I just chose some colors off of the CD cover and made the icing that color. Then, I used a WIlton tip that is for making hair & put black around the edges of the cake to look like a feather boa. For a little detail, I added musical notes all around the sides & put a pair of hot pink sunglasses on it.

I think it turned out fine, although it is not one of my favorites. I don't know if I have a favorite.

Spiderman Cake

For my sweet nephew, Cade... I hope you like it, big boy!

I used a spiderman coloring page and taped some wax paper on it. Then, I traced the image with black icing and colored it in. Then, I froze it & transferred it to the frosted cake. It broke, but it was easily repaired.

The first photo is before I filled in the neck a little more.
I also added the webs on each side as an after thought.

Elmo & Big Bird Cake ~ Fondant Adventures

This was more work than I thought it would be! Since I didn't know what I was doing, it started out fun & then became frustrating. Getting the fondant to the right consistency made it difficult to form shapes without it tearing. I probably will try it again someday. I'm sure if I kept practicing at it, I'd get better... but I think I'll stick to good old buttercream icing for awhile.

The recipe for the fondant was really easy. I used Marshmallow Fondant, which is very simple, yet very messy. My problem was that I was lacking a non-stick roller & one of those Roul'Pat Pastry Mats. Once I rolled the fondant out, it stuck to the counter and/or tore a bit when I tried to transer it to the cake.

This kind of fondant does taste better than the usual fondant that one can buy pre-made. Some of it was made to look like little gumballs, which made eating it easy & fun.

Overall, I'm glad I did it. Next time I will be prepared & maybe it will be more fun.

Dora Cake

This was made from 2 9x13 cakes, trimmed down to 2 nice-sized layers.
I used the buttercream icing from baking911.com and I think it is my best batch yet. It reallly holds up well overnight and it is tasty, not greasy. One tip for using that recipe is use REAL Crisco & real butter & name brand powered sugar. (or is that 3 tips?) I've tried the same recipe with cheaper ingredients & it really doesn't look or taste as good.

I used white for the crumb coat. Yellow for the base coat. Then I trimmed it with orange, pink, purple, and green. Very colorful! I got tired of using the star tip, so i switched to this twirly one. I don't know what it is called. I think the number on it is 78 (by Wilton).

The decorations are some that I had from a store-bought cake from when Erin turned 4. Dora & Boots are in a wind-up car that will really travel along the track.

Scooby Doo cake & cookies

This was made for my nephew.

For the cake, I used a 4 inch Wilton springform cake pan, whipped white Betty Crocker Icing with green and blue color blends. I should have added a little powdered sugar because once I got the coloring in it, it was a little thinner than I liked it to be.
I used chocolate icing for the lettering

For the cookies, I made Nestle Tollhouse recipe cookies and made them a bit large. Store-bought chocolate icing is piped all around a little used as glue for the Scooby decorations. I used store-bought chocolate because I can't seem to get it right as homemade.

I used a ridged steak knife to make the wiggles around the edge. If you click on the image, it will open as a much larger photo.

This was in my old photos file. It was a fun cake to make. I bought the care bear toys from Wal-Mart for about $5. They were able to be washed & played with by the birthday girl.

Santa Cake

We used a cake shaped like Santa's face and put it on a round cake. The beard and hat trim are mini-marshmallows cut in half and dipped in icing for gluing it on to the cake.

Caterpillar Cake

This was an adventure in mixing colors! I suggest using black jelly beans for eyes and licorice rope for the mouth. It's hard to get them "just right" which explains the goofy look on his face.

I also made a matching cup cake for the birthday girl.

Hello Kitty Cake

Here is an easy way to make a Hello Kitty cake.

Frost cake in pink. Make a stencil by using a coloring page of Hello Kitty. Cut out the outline and trace it on to the cake with a toothpick. Cut out the eyes and mouth & bow in her hair and mark in the right spot on the cake. Trace the outline in white icing (red for the bow).

Fill in the outline with dots of icing. If you don't have an icing bag, just use a baggie with a little tiny hole cut it the corner for making the dots.

Decorate the rest as you please. I just used pink red & white icing. The eyes and nose are jelly beans. The whiskers are licorice.

Polly Pocket Beach cake

This was so fun to make! I used two 9x13 cakes. I made the icing from the Baking 911 recipe files. It was more than enough for this big cake. The beach sand is made from graham cracker crumbs and Florida Crystals DEMERARA. Very yummy! It was actually far from being perfect, but it was perfect for us.

I had the hardest time finding a hula girl for the cake, so I settled for this set of Polly Pocket accesories. It was a cute cake & Erin loved it.
