Birthday Cakes for Kids

With four little girls in our house, we have a lot of fun. One way we have fun & save few dollars is to make our own birthday cakes. They choose the theme and I do my best to make it happen. I'm not the best yet, but I am getting better. This blog is for me to share my ideas with you and also for you to share yours with the rest of us do-it-all moms.

Barbie cake

This is probably the easiest one I've made. The only hard part was the crumb coat since this is a chocolate cake. I tend to use twice as much icing when the cake is chocolate because the crumbs get all over in the first layer of icing.

I chose 2 colors blended on white to create this misty look. The cups and table cloth Sarah picked were from the Magic of Pegasus Barie theme. The candle appears to be the Princess and the Pauper theme. Sarah didn't mind, so here we are with a mix of the two.

I used a large spreader from Pampered Chef to do the main icing. Then I used the small spreader for the colors on the sides. The piping was done with Wilton tip number 78 with a portion of all 3 colors in one icing bag.

I have about 2 Tablespoons of icing left. I might go back and make it more violet so I can redo the name and age...hmmm... There is not enough contrast now that I look at it again.

Sooo... I messed with it and messed it up and tried to fix it and made many more errors & just had to live with it.

You will LOVE the Wilton classes! I had so much fun at them. In fact, I just got my first cakes scanned in and have to add them to the website. The classes just started out for fun, something in the back of my mind that I have always wanted to do. I took them with my Sister in-law and Mother in-law just to make cakes for family and ended up selling a ton of them. The best part is that I make them for my son, which is very special for me. Why don't you e-mail me at my home address robin@elmore.rr.com and I can help you out with any questions you may ever have. Also, I loved taking the additional classes Wilton offered in my area. The Sugar Eggs at Easter time was a BLAST! My co-workers loved them so much that we set up a two day training in out conference room for me to show a bunch of the ladies that I worked with how to make them. Since you have children they would love to make them to. It is fun and very easy. If you would like I can send you the easy to follow directions to make them. I have always wanted to go back to learn gumpaste flowers, but I know they are very expensive to make. You can purchase them premade on sites like Sugarcraft.com and other places. It was so great to hear from you. I hope you have fun at the classes.
